Earlier this month, Sgt. La David Johnson was killed in an ambush in Niger. President Trump personally phoned Myeshia Johnson, the fallen sergeantβs widow. Rather than offering his true condolences, President Trump reportedly insisted that βhe knew what he signed up for.β Rep. Frederica Wilson of Florida also heard the phone call and called Trump out on his disrespectful comment. She was riding in a limo with her when the president called. Myeshia Johnson recently appeared on Good Morning America to address the situation.
βThe president said that, βHe knew what he signed up for, but it hurts anyways.β It made me cry because I was very angry at the tone of his voice and how he said it,β she said. βHe couldnβt remember my husbandβs name.β
She said Trump told her that he had her husbandβs report in front of him, and that she heard him stumbling to remember his name.
βAnd thatβs what hurt me the most,β she said. βBecause if my husband is out here fighting for our country, and he risked his life for our country, why canβt you remember his name? Thatβs what made me upset and cry even more.β
She said she didnβt say anything to the president, she just listened.Β Trump tweeted about Wilson, calling her βwackyβ and accusing her of lying on him. Johnson confirmed that Wilson was β100% correctβ about what the president said over the phone.
βThe phone was on speakerphone,β Johnson said. βWhy would we fabricate something like that?β
Johnson said she wants the world to know how great of a soldier her husband was. She is expecting a baby girl in January, whom she plans to tell βher father is a hero.β
