North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper’s decision to appoint Judge Carolyn Thompson to the North Carolina Court of Appeals has made history.
The move elevates the Judge to the highest-ranking African American female position in the state’s judicial system.
Judge Thompson’s appointment to Seat 12 on the North Carolina Court of Appeals was a significant move, acknowledging her 27 years of dedication to the legal profession and commitment to fair and equitable justice.
Cooper praised her extensive experience and her distinguished career across various judicial roles.
“The reason I appointed her is because of her record,” Cooper stated in a press release published by Black New. “She’s been on the front line and in the trenches as an attorney, a trial judge, a district court judge, and now on the court of appeals. She’s the right one for the job, and we need to keep her there.”
As North Carolina’s judicial races become increasingly partisan, Judge Thompson, a registered Democrat in a battleground state, faces a challenging campaign across 100 counties.
Her opponent, lacking judicial experience but benefiting from significant campaign contributions, presents a formidable challenge.
Judge Thompson emphasized her commitment to impartiality and her extensive legal background.
“As a former trial attorney and trial judge, my authored opinions are guided by my extensive experience,” she explained in the press release. “I strive to provide final answers devoid of partisan ideologies, approaching cases with unbiased lenses to review lower courts’ decisions. At this level of appellate review, potentially affecting generations, my 27 years of expertise ensures fair and just outcomes.”
