Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris is imploring her supporters to keep saying Breonna Taylor’s name, as the Black community rallies for justice in her name.
“Tonight, I’m thinking of Breonna Taylor’s family who is still grieving the loss of a daughter and sister,” Harris tweeted on Wednesday evening. “We must never stop speaking Breonna’s name as we work to reform our justice system, including overhauling no-knock warrants.”
Brett Hankison was the only officer who was indicted over the night of Taylor’s death. He was basically charged for shooting into the homes of three of Taylor’s white neighbors. Not for her murder.
No charges were brought against the other two officers involved in the March shooting, Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove. No officers were held accountable for her killing.
In a separate tweet, Harris wrote: “.@JoeBiden and I are keeping the police officers who were shot in Louisville in our hearts, wishing them a swift and speedy recovery. Violence is not the answer and we must find a way to express our grief, anger, and demands in ways that reflect the world we wish to see.”
The indictments (or lack thereof) have sparked protests nationwide.
Two Louisville police officers were shot amid local protests hours after the grand jury’s decision was announced.
Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Robert Schroeder said both officers were receiving treatment at a hospital nearby and that a suspect was in custody.
“One is alert and stable. The other officer is currently undergoing surgery and stable. We do have one suspect in custody,” he added.
