Pamela Warner, the mother of actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner (MJW), has granted a lengthy interview for the first time since her son’s tragic passing in July.
In an emotional interview with Good Morning America, she shared both the depth of her grief and the peace she has found with his transition.
As previously reported, Warner died in Costa Rica after accidentally drowning while in the ocean. Early speculation suggested he had been attempting to rescue his young daughter, but Pamela clarified that the child was safe onshore at the time of the incident.

Pamela explained that Warner and another man were waist-to-chest deep in the water when a sudden undertow pulled them under. While the other man managed to save himself, Warner—who was not an experienced swimmer—was unable to escape.
“They were in the water, I think maybe chest-deep,” Pamela told GMA. “There was an undertow and my son was not an experienced swimmer. He did not know how to deal with an undertow.”
Recalling the moment she learned of her son’s death, Pamela said she screamed “from the bottom of her soul,” describing it as an “indescribable pain.” Still, she pointed out that she has reached acceptance:
“That was his time. That was the manner in which he was to transition, and this is what I believe and what I feel. I’m very grateful that I was chosen to be his mother… I feel that our journey together as mother and son was complete.”
Pamela also revealed that Warner’s wife and daughter are still grappling with the devastating loss, especially since his daughter reportedly witnessed attempts to resuscitate him. Despite the pain, Pamela believes they will get through the grieving process together as a family.
The family has asked for continued prayers and support as they mourn the beloved actor’s passing.
