A man in Las Vegas has been arrested and charged with a hate crime after hurling racial slurs at a Black dental office employee, police records indicate.
Christopher Cox, a white man, faces a charge of a hate/bias crime, a gross misdemeanor in the state of Nevada.
The victim, who has not been identified, informed authorities that Cox “became irate when he discovered his treatment would cost more than expected,” according to an 8 News NOW report. He had visited the dental implant center near Sunset and Fort Apache roads in the southwest valley for a consultation.
The suspect then proceeded to call the business seven times and the victim’s mobile phone six times in the span of 15 minutes, police documents show.
In audio recordings obtained by police, Cox can be heard stating that he was “ready to unleash on this place” while repeatedly using a racial slur.
In one call, Cox allegedly said “[expletive] [expletive] gonna [sic] die.”
Cox further went on to state that “the Black lady was an idiot and should be killed,” according a text message exchange he had with another employee who was involved in an exchange with the suspect who was requesting a refund for the consultation.
Following the incident, Cox was arrested at a Las Vegas casino Monday and is due in court Mar. 28.
The news comes nearly one week another man was charged with attempted murder and a hate crime after police confirmed he struck a Black woman and man with a metal pipe while taking a walk.
A fire department crew found Job Uriah Taylor assaulting the pair and fended him off before calling the authorities to report the attack.
One victim was transported to the hospital and released the same day while the other was treated for a head injury.
“Taylor yelled several racial slurs at the victim,” police said in a press statement.
Before attacking the couple, police say the suspect attacked another victim on a train platform using the same weapon he used on the man and woman. He hit the victim several times while yelling racial slurs.
Taylor has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, one count of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury.
