A recent Rolling Stone article argues that Meghan Markle and her husband Prince Harry’s “ship might have sailed” following a new report revealing that the princess and prince are blaming the royal family and the pandemic for reasons they have not been able to find their professional footing since leaving the UK in 2020.
According to Page Six and The Daily Mail, “the word is that they think they’ve been really unlucky,” a source told the latter outlet.
In reality, the world changed drastically since leaving the royal family. Months after they announced they would be stepping down from their royal roles, COVID-19 took the world by force. A year later, the pair spoke with Oprah in an exclusive interview for CBS. Prince Philip died that same year and they welcomed their second child, Princess Lilibet Diana in June. In 2022, Queen Elizabeth died at 96.
But before all the above transpired, the couple inked two lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify, respectively. The now-defunct podcast, Archetypes, hosted by Meghan, only produced one season of the show, which was fundamentally eclipsed by Queen Elizabeth’s death in September.
However, their six-part 2022 Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan was a hit among audiences and Prince Harry’s Heart of Invictus will premiere next month. His memoir, Spare, also did well when it was released in January.
Despite their wins, The Daily Express’ royal commentator Alison Boshoff said in the publication that “their ambition to become a global humanitarian power couple seems, for the moment at least, to be on ice.”
Furthermore, Louis Staples with Rolling Stone wrote that “It feels like the ship might have sailed on the Sussexes achieving that Oprah-style, Michelle Obama-status they seem to covet, because these women have become icons through using their voices sparingly over the years. A “less is more” approach has allowed them to cut through the noise when it really counts. If Harry and Meghan want to become icons through being overexposed (as they are currently) then they need to channel their inner Kardashian and give us something new. Because right now, apart from familial beef that is past its sell-by-date, it doesn’t seem like they have much else to offer.”
