Grace Moore, a 12-year-old musical prodigy from Brooklyn, broke barriers back in 2020, and her remarkable story is the spotlight for this Women’s History Month special.
Moore grabbed national headlines when she made history four years ago as one of the youngest composers for the prestigious New York Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra.
Her remarkable achievement was highlighted in a video for the Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers program, where Moore’s original composition, “Summer,” was featured.
The Very Young Composers program offers individuals, regardless of their musical backgrounds, the opportunity to create music and have it performed by Philharmonic musicians.
Participants also receive guidance and mentorship from Philharmonic Teaching Artists, fostering their artistic development.
For Moore, music serves as a powerful means of self-expression.
“Music just gives me another way to express myself because I’m shy,” she shared during the event. “I feel like music can change how people see the world around them.”
Moore’s journey into music began at the age of 2 when her mother gifted her a piano. Since then, she has remained dedicated to her craft, drawing inspiration from her surroundings and current events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.
Reflecting on her creative process, Moore revealed:
“I was thinking about current events in quarantine like coronavirus and Black Lives Matter.”
Her composition was a strong reflection of the times, capturing the essence of the world around her through music.
Despite her young age, Moore’s musical talent has garnered widespread recognition and praise. Her mother emphasized the importance of music in Moore’s life, stating:
“I think music is really important. If you don’t remember anything, you remember a song.”
Moore’s debut of “Summer” with the New York Philharmonic was a moment of immense pride for both her and her family.
“I am so happy that she was able to showcase her piece, her debut of ‘Summer,’ with the wonderful program Very Young Composers and the New York Philharmonic,” Moore’s mother expressed.
As Moore continues to pursue her passion for music, she hopes to inspire others to follow their dreams and pursue their hobbies.
“I hope everyone follows their hobbies and do what they love,” she remarked, embodying the spirit of creativity and determination.
