A 16-year-old girl from Georgia who had been missing for over a year has been found alive in Tennessee, authorities confirmed Monday, March 17, 2025.
Asata Amun, who disappeared in February 2024, was discovered in the custody of the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services, where she had been living under a different name.
Gwinnett County police announced that Tennessee officials contacted them after noticing inconsistencies in the teen’s statements, leading to her identification.
Amun was last seen on her family’s video doorbell footage running barefoot from her Sugar Hill home.
Her father, Kwabena Amun, reported her missing, and in April 2024, police asked for the public’s help in locating her. The case gained renewed attention last week when Asata’s mother, Jasmine Dominique, pleaded for her safe return in an emotional television interview.
Authorities said the teen’s disappearance was surrounded by troubling circumstances. Police previously searched her father’s home, and two of her sisters were removed by Child Protective Services following abuse allegations.
Amun denied the claims but acknowledged that his daughter had disciplinary issues before she vanished.

A breakthrough in the case came when a Tennessee caseworker investigating inconsistencies in Asata’s statements cross-checked her information with missing children reports from Georgia.
That discovery ultimately led to her safe recovery in La Vergne, Tennessee—about 250 miles from her hometown.
Arrangements are now being made to transfer custody of Amun to the Georgia Department of Family & Children Services. The investigation into her disappearance remains ongoing.
