A Philadelphia restaurant owner is fighting back after enduirng harassment and bullying from neighbors who don’t want her business in their community.
Shakeira Turner, the owner of Chubby Chicks, a brunch spot in Center City, says she has faced false complaints, vandalism, and even racial insults—but she refuses to be pushed out.
A Business Under Attack
Chubby Chicks, located at 1111 Walnut Street, is known for its lively and welcoming atmosphere, offering brunch and weekend karaoke.
However, since opening just two months ago, Turner says she has faced relentless pushback from neighbors who don’t believe her restaurant belongs in the area.
According to Turner, the harassment has escalated beyond just words. She alleges that individuals have:
- Filed false noise complaints, claiming the restaurant operates late into the night—even though it closes at 3 p.m. on weekdays.
- Stolen business signs and attempted to flood the building multiple times.
- Left dead rats outside the restaurant’s entrance as an intimidation tactic.
- Confronted her with racially charged remarks.
Turner recounted a particularly painful moment when someone questioned how she was able to open her business, allegedly asking, “Did I use my drug dealer baby daddy’s money?”
Fighting Back with Community Support
Despite the hostility, Turner is standing her ground, emphasizing that Chubby Chicks is a dream she has worked hard to bring to life.
“My life savings, my home—all of that is wrapped up into this business,” she told Fox 29. “It would be devastating to lose it.”
Since speaking out, Turner has seen an outpouring of support from both local and out-of-state patrons who are rallying behind her. Her story has gained traction on social media, with customers making a point to visit Chubby Chicks and show their solidarity.
“I can’t even say thank you enough,” Turner said in a heartfelt video. “The support I’m getting is overwhelming and so sweet.”
As the community continues to back Turner, her focus remains on running her business professionally and proving that Chubby Chicks is here to stay.
