A resurfaced clip of an interview with P!nk on SiriusXM’s The Morning Rush is setting the record straight about Mary J. Blige’s selectivity when collaborating with other artists.
The interview, conducted in 2017, shows the 44-year-old Pennsylvania native recalling a time when she approached the Real Love star to do a record together.
“I went into her trailer long time ago, I think it was when I hosted the Lady of Soul Train, the Soul Train Awards. I walked into her trailer, and I was like, ‘Hi! Um, would you ever work with me?’ and she just took one look at me and she goes, ‘No.’ And I go, ‘OK!’” P!nk recollected.
At the time, the So What star was hosting the 2000 6th annual Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards alongside Sisqó and Shemar Moore.
That same year, P!nk released her debut album, Can’t Take Me Home, which was spearheaded under the guidance of music executive L.A. Reid, who she credits for propelling her career. It was also around that time when she became known for her signature pink hair and an urban sound mixed with pop and R&B.
But going back to the Queen of R&B encounter, P!nk said she wasn’t bothered by Mary’s honesty.
“That’s what I love about her. No, I respect it. I respect it. So many people will be like, ‘Yeah, call me!’” she said.
Meanwhile, on social media, users began to react to the resurfaced clip.
“Maybe she just didn’t like her or rate her music! Hell Diana Ross won’t sing on stage with Lionel Ritchie, sometimes you just don’t take to people,” one wrote.
Another wrote: “As I write this, the person next to me right now at work gets on my last nerve.”
“Prob cuz that was back when Pink was tryna be black Mary said, ‘Umm you not authentic,’” another chimed in.
“Mary keeps it 100 and she doesn’t do a lot of collaborations she said that,” another wrote.
