Remembering Verda Annan, The Selfless Harvard Student Who Got America Talking After Donating Her $40,000 Scholarship

by Gee NY

In 2021, Verda Annan, a Ghanaian student at Harvard University, captured the attention of America with her selfless act of generosity.

Despite being awarded a full scholarship to Harvard University, Annan donated all the $40,000 scholarship from her high school to her less privileged classmates who would be attending community colleges.

Addressing the audience during her high school graduation ceremony, Annan expressed her gratitude for the scholarship but felt that it should benefit someone in greater need.

She also spoke about her mother’s experience attending community college and the support it provided, urging the administration to consider giving the scholarship to a student pursuing education at a community college.

During an interview on the ‘Steve on Watch’ show, Annan attributed her actions to the values instilled in her by her family, friends, and communities both in Ghana and abroad.

She said she was guided by the importance of integrity, kindness, and doing the right thing, stating that she felt compelled to make a difference in someone else’s life.

Looking ahead, Annan aspires to become a health expert to contribute to improving healthcare in Ghana and around the world.

As a token of appreciation for her altruism, she was gifted a 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe by sponsors of the ‘Steve on Watch’ show.

Verda Annan’s story still inspires acts of kindness and generosity across the globe three years on!
