A 72-year-old Arizona woman is facing multiple felony charges after she allegedly shot her adult son during a dispute that began over the noise from a video game.
According to authorities, the incident occurred around 9 p.m. on May 17.
When police arrived at the home, they found a 38-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where his injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.
Police identified the shooter as Hazel Benson, the man’s mother, who reportedly became agitated after an argument escalated over her son’s video game volume.
According to Fox 10 Phoenix, Benson told officers she had warned her son about the noise level before the situation intensified. He left the house to cool off but returned later, only to find the door locked.
Police say Benson claimed her son “came at her with closed fists,” prompting her to shoot him in the abdomen. Investigators say she later admitted she was angry about the noise and confessed to throwing the firearm into a nearby canal after the shooting.
Benson was arrested and is now facing charges including:
- Aggravated assault
- Disorderly conduct
- Discharge of a firearm within city limits
Neighbors expressed disbelief over the violence. One said, “I can’t imagine his mother shooting him.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not released the names of those involved pending formal charges.
