Tragedy struck on Dec. 28 when Ty’Keria Rogers, an 18-year-old African American high school senior, lost her life after a tornado caused a tree to fall on her home.
The tree collapsed on the porch where Ty’Keria was, fatally injuring her despite the efforts of emergency responders who used chainsaws to clear debris.
Ty’Keria, the cheerleading captain at Natchez High School and a soon-to-be graduate in May, was celebrated by her school and community as a beacon of positivity and talent. The Natchez High School community gathered for a candlelight vigil on Dec. 29 to honor her memory.
In a heartfelt tribute, the school wrote, “Ty’Keria was a bright light in our school and community, known for her talent, energy, and uplifting spirit. Her passing leaves a deep void in our hearts.”
Natchez Adams School District Superintendent Zandra McDonald described the harrowing moments following the tornado, witnessing the anguish of Ty’Keria’s family as rescue crews searched for her amidst the wreckage.
“As I watched a mama, grandmother, aunts and uncles pace, cry and scream in agony — no words,” McDonald shared.
Remembering Ty’Keria as “energetic, funny, and personable,” McDonald encouraged the community to support her grieving family through prayer and contributions.
A GoFundMe campaign has raised over $100,000 to help cover funeral expenses and repair the family’s home, which sustained severe damage during the storm.
Two others were injured in the incident, though their conditions remain undisclosed.
Ty’Keria’s untimely death is a devastating reminder of the destructive power of tornadoes and the fragility of life. Her legacy as a leader, friend, and vibrant presence in her community will not be forgotten.
