A 76-year-old woman in Tigray has defied expectations by giving birth to her first child, sparking widespread awe and discussion across the region.
Embeyte Medhin Hagos, also known as Medhin Barka, delivered a baby boy at a hospital in Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray regional state, after undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) in India a year ago.
The extraordinary birth has been hailed as a miracle, especially in a region still reeling from years of war and displacement.
“I was not convinced at all when I was told I had conceived,” she admitted in an interview with Dimtse Woyane television. A relative echoed the amazement, stating, “Nothing is impossible to the Holy Saviour.”
Social media has been abuzz with reactions, with many drawing biblical comparisons to Sarah, who gave birth to Isaac at 90. Footage from the child’s baptism shared by Dimtse Woyane captured an atmosphere of celebration.
Tigray has endured devastating conflict since 2020, with ongoing territorial disputes, internal strife, and a humanitarian crisis that has left millions displaced or seeking refuge.
Against this backdrop, Embeyte Medhin’s story has provided a rare moment of joy and inspiration for many.
