Victoria Monét has finally addressed her split with boyfriend John Gaines, including rumors of infidelity, toxic behavior, or drama. In a statement, Monét revealed that the couple, who share a daughter named Hazel, have been separated for 10 months.

It is unclear when the former couple began seeing each other, but they became the talk of the internet in 2020. He also made his debut in her Moment music video, which was released in February of that year, and she revealed her pregnancy in December of the same year.

The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and the fitness trainer shared a joint statement on social media on September 23, revealing they have decided to end their romantic relationship.

“We originally preferred to keep this out of the public…but it is becoming more and more difficult to suppress,” the statement read. Acknowledging the false accusations surrounding their relationship, it explained that they both needed time apart to grow individually. “There was no infidelity, toxic behavior nor drama. We both just have some fundamental growing to do that would be best done apart so we can remain the best versions of ourselves for our daughter,” the noted added.

Before sharing the news, they “thought long and hard about whether we owed it to anyone to explain where we are as we heal, since we understand how social media can magnify the truth or run far with untruths,” the statement continued. Ultimately, we decided to be open and address it in hopes of putting a period on the question marks for the sake of our healing process.”

Monét and Gaines concluded by requesting privacy during this time, urging the public to be “understanding and gentle” when seeing them together. Despite the split, the couple intends to “remain a family regardless of our public-facing title.”

The family walked the red carpet together for the 2024 Grammy Awards earlier this year. Monét won the coveted Best New Artist award, Best R&B Album, and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.
