by Gee NY

Winnie Dortch, an Ohio-based reporter for WOIO 19 News, is recovering in the hospital after being shot in a domestic violence incident on the morning of Oct. 7.

The incident, which occurred near Clifton Boulevard in Lakewood, Ohio, also left a man, 34-year-old Bryant Carter, dead at the scene.

Lakewood police responded to a report of an argument between two individuals around 8 a.m. When they arrived on Chase Avenue, they discovered Dortch and Carter, both suffering from gunshot wounds.

Dortch was rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center, where she underwent surgery for her injuries.

According to a GoFundMe organized by Precious Harris, Dortch, who is a single mother to a four-year-old daughter, has multiple surgeries ahead and will need extensive recovery.

The reporter had recently planned to move back to Chicago and begin a new chapter in her career at WGN9 News.

In a statement, 19 News Director Brian Sinclair expressed the station’s shock and sadness:

“This morning, our friend and colleague Winnie Dortch was the victim of a brutal domestic violence attack. Our prayers are with her, her young daughter, and the many other victims of domestic violence in our community.”

Dortch’s family is thankful for her survival and is asking the public for prayers as she heals physically and emotionally.

Contributions through GoFundMe will assist in covering her medical expenses and support for her daughter during this challenging time.
