Woman Invents Anti-Asthma Body Spray for Safer Breathing

Asthma remains a significant global health concern, affecting approximately 262 million people worldwide and resulting in over 455,000 deaths annually, according to the World Health Organization.

In the United States alone, about 25 million individuals are living with asthma, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Notably, fragrances and scented products are common triggers for asthma attacks, with studies indicating that 64.3% of asthmatics experience adverse health effects from exposure to fragranced consumer products.

Addressing this pressing issue, Zambian pharmaceutical innovator Florence Mulenga has developed an anti-asthma body spray designed to prevent asthma attacks.

Mulenga, who earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy from the University of Zambia in November 2022, recognized the need for personal care products that cater to individuals with respiratory conditions, according to African Folder.

Traditional body sprays and perfumes often contain strong fragrances and chemicals that can trigger asthma symptoms, making them unsuitable for asthmatics.

Mulenga’s innovative body spray offers a safer alternative by utilizing ingredients that are gentle on the respiratory system. This specially formulated solution provides a pleasant scent without causing irritation, allowing individuals with asthma to enjoy personal fragrances without compromising their health. Her work not only enhances the quality of life for asthmatics but also sets a precedent for the development of more inclusive and health-conscious personal care products.

The significance of Mulenga’s creation is underscored by the prevalence of fragrance-induced asthma symptoms. Research has shown that 27.9% of asthmatics report experiencing asthma attacks due to exposure to fragranced products.

Furthermore, 41.0% of asthmatics have reported health problems from air fresheners or deodorizers, and 46.2% from being near someone wearing a fragranced product.

By prioritizing safety and comfort, Mulenga’s anti-asthma body spray addresses a critical gap in the personal care market.
