At just 23 years old, Carlene Gentles is redefining gender roles in Jamaica’s barbering industry.
Based in Mandeville, Gentles has quickly gained recognition as the only female barber in her parish, carving out a space in a male-dominated profession with skill, determination, and a passion for her craft.
Gentles began her journey just two years ago when she was searching for a unique way to earn a living.
“I needed a job, but I didn’t want to just seek one. I wanted to create something,” she explained.
After prayer and reflection, the idea of becoming a barber came to her, leading her to approach a local barber shop for training.
“I just kept coming every day until I got it,” Gentles said, reflecting on her early days when clients were hesitant to trust her skills. “People thought I’d mess their hair up because I’m a female, but now I’m proud to be the only female barber in my parish.”
Earning Client Trust
One of her earliest clients, Andrew Nelson, witnessed her growth firsthand. “She used to take two or three hours initially, but now she’s finished in no time,” he shared.
Another loyal client, Renard Williams, expressed his comfort in her chair, noting:
“I was impressed, and I don’t really like men in my space, so it felt comfortable.”
Barber Peter Binns, who mentored Gentles, praised her determination.
“When I started, no one helped me, so I understood her struggles. I tried to guide her because things are always hard at first, but once you learn, it becomes easy,” he said.
More Than Barbering
In addition to barbering, Gentles excels in lash extensions and micro shading, showcasing her versatility and entrepreneurial spirit. She attributes her drive to her upbringing and her desire for creative freedom.
“Barbering gives me the freedom I want,” she said.
Her advice to others is simple yet profound:
“Start with imagination. Step outside your comfort zone, and align your actions with your vision. You shape your reality.”
