At just 7 years old, Mia Dates is being hailed as a hero after her quick thinking and calm response helped save her father’s life following a frightening fall at their home in Lynwood, Illinois.
The incident happened on a Wednesday night, Jan. 21, 2026, while Mia was home alone with her father, Xavier Dates, a 41-year-old railroad conductor. Mia’s mother was at work when the unexpected occurred. As Xavier descended a flight of stairs, he lost his footing, struck his head multiple times, and quickly lost consciousness.
With no adult present and her father unresponsive, Mia did not panic. Instead, she sprang into action—running to the phone, dialing 911, and staying on the line with the dispatcher while help was on the way. She clearly provided the address, followed instructions, and later opened the door to paramedics when they arrived.
Emergency officials say those actions were critical.
According to village leaders who later reviewed the emergency call, Mia’s composure and ability to communicate essential information directly contributed to the successful rescue. The mayor, along with local police and fire chiefs, personally visited Mia to commend her bravery and presence of mind.
“When you called, you were calm and collected,” one official told her. “You knew the number, you gave the address, and you stayed on the phone the whole time. That alone saved somebody.”
