In the trailer for her upcoming documentary, “Halftime,” viewers see Hollywood actress Jennifer Lopez break down after she was snubbed by the Oscars for her role in “Hustlers.”
Lopez is expected to be nominated at the Academy Awards for her role in the 2019 movie. Alas, the Oscars overlooked her performance, which had her questioning her purpose.
Inspired by the viral New York Magazine article, “Hustlers” follows a young stripper named Destiny who is struggling to make ends meet—until she meets Ramona (Lopez), the club’s shrewd top earner. Ramona shows her how to make money (and a lot of it). Lopez trained long and hard to perfect her moves, but it simply wasn’t enough.
“It was hard. I just had a very low self-esteem,” Lopez says as she weeps. “I had to really figure out who I was and believe in that and not believe anything else.” She later adds, “I do this, not for an award. No, I do this to connect with people and make them feel things because I want to feel something.”
“Halftime” debuts Opening Night at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 8. The project documents J.Lo’s rise to fame and sees the starlet battle to be “taken seriously” by the media and the industry as a whole.
Lopez previously addressed the snub during Oprah Winfrey’s “2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus Tour.”
“Most of my team has been with me for years… and I think they had a lot of hopes on that and they wanted it, too, so I felt like I let everyone down a little bit,” Lopez said at the time. “You realize you want people’s validation. You want people to say you did a good job, and I realized, ‘No, you don’t need that. You do this because you love it.’ I don’t need this award to tell me I’m enough.”
