The younger sister to Ja Morant has officially announced her commitment to Mississippi Valley State University. In an Instagram post Wednesday, Teniya Morant wrote “Let’s go Devilettes,” a nod to the school’s mascot and team name.
In January, Morant tweeted that she had just received her first Division 1 offer, stating that she was “very thankful” and included the hashtag “it’s only up from here.”
Last year, the 18-year-old basketball athlete averaged 11.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game at Houston High School, the school she currently attends.
During the season, the 5 foot 3 sister to Memphis Grizzlies star led her team, the Mustangs, to a 50-29 record.
Sports analysts are almost certain Morant will face off against rival Angel Reese, the rising athlete for Louisiana State University.
“congrats bby… see you game 2,” Reese wrote in the comments to Morant’s Instagram post.
“see you game 2…” Morant replied.
The LSU Tigers defeated the MSVU Devilettes 111-41 last November, which played a role in Reese and the Tigers winning the national championship earlier this year.
Critics believe Morant’s addition to the team will help spruce up the team’s lackluster 2-27 record last season.
Reese and Morant have publicly accoladed each other in the past. Reese has referred to Morant as her “long lost” sister, so critics think even though they will be opponents in the upcoming season, they will continue to remain friends.
News of Morant’s announcement comes on the heels of Morant’s brother Ja being suspended for the second time after he was seen on video with a gun. In 2022, he was named a defendant in a lawsuit in which he was accused of punching a teenager during a basketball game. Reports say the two were involved in a heated verbal exchange before the 17-year-old “accidentally” hit Morant. The 23-year-old punched the teen, then struck him multiple times after he fell to the ground.
