Kourtni Smith, a resilient 34-year-old mother of five from St Mary’s County, Maryland, is courageously facing a terminal cancer diagnosis, determined to inspire others and raise awareness about the crucial importance of seeking medical help early on.
In 2021, Kourtni’s cancer journey began with a Stage 3 invasive lobular carcinoma diagnosis. Reflecting on the initial diagnosis, she shared, “I’m asking them questions like, could it be this, stuff I’ve read about online, and they said ‘no, it’s cancer,’” speaking to WUSA9.
According to a report that detailed Smith’s journey with terminal cancer, by April of the same year, the cancer had progressed to Stage 4. Recently, heartbreaking news arrived as doctors informed her that the cancer had spread to her brain, giving her only a few months to live.
Despite the difficult circumstances, Kourtni focuses on creating lasting memories with her family and preparing for the challenging road ahead.
Her husband Andre highlighted the resilience brought by their 2-year-old son, stating:
“Our 2-year-old son, he always keeps us smiling. So it’s really the kids that are keeping us up like this.”
Reflecting on her journey, Kourtni expressed regret for not seeking medical attention sooner when she noticed a dimple in her breast. Fear prevented her from seeking help until after her baby’s birth when she couldn’t produce milk.
After enduring three rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, and spending three weeks in hospice, Kourtni now relies on pain medication for comfort. Her legacy will be carried by her husband and five children.
“I would want them to know that I love them, and I love them so much,” Kourtni shared. “I would go to any drastic measures to make sure they’re okay. Even beyond the grave.”
To support her family during this challenging time, Kourtni has personally set up a GoFundMe page for funeral expenses.
Additionally, she is working on a children’s book as a lasting legacy for her beloved children.
