Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones is reportedly gearing up to announce that she will run for Congress again this year.
The news was first featured in the Detroit Free Press, although Jones is yet to make any formal announcement.
The publication says that a political tracking website called Poltics1.com posted on Twitter that Jones had filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission indicating she is a candidate in 2020.
Jones lost out to U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib in 2018.
Jones’ served just five weeks in Congress in the final weeks of former Rep. John Conyers’ term in the U.S. House. She was elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred Fifteenth Congress, by special election, to fill the vacancy after Conyers resigned.
“Mr. Speaker, let me start out by saying, ‘To God be the glory.’ I want to thank God for giving me this great opportunity,” the 59-year-old Michigan Democrat told then-House Speaker Paul Ryan as she was being sworn in.
Tlaib became the first Palestinian-American woman in Congress as well as one of the first two Muslim women in Congress, along with fellow Democrat Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. Tlaib took the congressional oath of office swearing-in on an English-language translation of the Quran in January 2019.
“Presided over the U.S. House of Representatives today. Not bad for a girl from Detroit that didn’t speak English when I started school & first in my family to graduate high school & college,” Tlaib tweeted at the time in celebration of the historic moment.
