Gospel superstar Yolanda Adams is opening up about the criticism she has faced over her fashion choices throughout her career.
In an interview with People, Adams, 63, addressed the backlash she’s received for wearing form-fitting clothes in a genre that often ‘preaches’ modesty.
Reflecting on her upbringing in a “free-thinking” household, Adams shared that she never felt restricted by beauty standards or fashion expectations.
“Because of the way I was raised… I didn’t feel any need to be anybody other than Yolanda,” Adams explained.
Adams, who stands at 6 feet tall, said her slender frame made it easier to embrace more fitted styles when gospel fashion began evolving in the ’90s and early 2000s.
However, not everyone was on board. Her 2001 album Believe featured an album cover with Adams in a stunning electric blue gown, which shocked parts of the faith-based community.
While some were quick to criticize, Adams points out that many of those critics eventually became her supporters.
“Cut it out,” she jokes, recalling the shift. “These are the same people who are now fans… No, you didn’t. Because I remember!”
Adams’ sense of style has earned her a loyal following and the nickname “Thee Gospel Stallion,” in reference to rapper Megan Thee Stallion, and her peers have often come to her defense.
Fellow gospel artist Erica Campbell supported Adams after she was criticized for a gown worn to the Stellar Awards, urging people to focus on the spirit rather than outward appearance.
Adams remains unapologetic about her choices and encourages others to live freely without judgment.
“I thank God for the way I was raised,” she says, “because I don’t have those restraints, and I don’t put those restraints on anybody else.”
