Rep. Ilhan Omar has said that President Donald Trumpâs constant verbal attacks are threatening her life.
The Minnesota congresswoman spoke to MSNBC over the weekend, after the president said she âtruly hates our countryâ at a rally in Michigan over the weekend.
âShe hates our country. She comes from a place that doesnât even have a government, and then she comes here tells us how to run our country,â he told the crowd. âThank you very much, sheâs a real â sheâs a wonderful â sheâs a wonderful person,â he continued, his remarks dripping with sarcasm.
âIf you look at the House with Pelosi and these people, itâs like they hate Israel and they believe in Omar, who came in here and married her brother or something, came in illegally,â Trump said, referring to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. âCome on, come on Justice. Letâs go Justice, Department of Justice.â
Since the beginning of his term as president, Trump has repeatedly targeted progressive Democrat newcomers, he labeled âThe Squad.â Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna S. Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan are also members of the so-called âSquad.â
âEvery time the president has invoked my name, it has incited violence against me,â Omar said on MSNBCâs The Week.
âThis president is creating an environment where he is threatening to lock up his political opponents, where people no longer understand that in a democracy we are supposed to debate policy differences but we are not supposed to harm one another,â she added. âAnd when you have a leader, the president of the United States not understand that, then there is danger, not only to our way of life, but to our democracy and the ways itâs supposed to function.â
