Lela Rochon Reflects On How She Aced Her Iconic ‘Boomerang’ Role: ‘I Thought I Deserved The Lead’

In a refreshingly honest conversation shared by Hillman Grad (@hillmangrad), actress Lela Rochon has opened up about her experience working on the classic 1992 romantic comedy Boomerang.

She revealed both the frustration and creative pride that came with not landing the leading role — but still becoming one of the film’s most unforgettable characters.

Rochon, best known for her roles in Waiting to Exhale and Why Do Fools Fall in Love, reflected on how she originally auditioned for Robin Givens’ role before being offered the smaller part of Christy, the striking woman whose scene with Eddie Murphy has since become iconic.

“My agent said they might go with me for the Robin Givens role,” Rochon recalled. “But that ended up not working out. They said, ‘We have another role — Christy.’ When I read it, I thought it was hilarious. I was like, okay, I’m gonna kill this.”

Despite not being the “leading lady,” Rochon’s performance stole attention — a fact she embraced only after coming to terms with her initial disappointment.

“It was very frustrating because, you know, I thought I deserved the lead,” she admitted. “But I also looked at the character and what they were really looking for. Robin was great in that role. Halle was where she should’ve been. And I was where I was. I just went into that movie trying to do the best I could in that role.”

A Creative Force Behind the Scenes

Rochon also shared that her now-famous look in Boomerang — featuring a sleek white ensemble and a perfectly coordinated dog — was her idea:

“At the costume fitting, they had a Dalmatian dog and a Dalmatian coat. I was like, that’s ugly! I said, ‘Do you have any other dogs?’ They showed me pictures, and I said, ‘That one. I want to be monochromatic — all white.’ We had to fight for it because they said you don’t wear white on film. But I got my way.”

She didn’t stop there. Determined to make Christy stand out on screen, Rochon worked with a trainer and even pitched how the camera should frame her entrance scene:

“I said, ‘You’re going to shoot all this, right? You should pan up my legs — it’ll look really good.’”

The result? A few seconds of screen time that audiences still remember vividly — and quote to this day.

The Legacy of a Scene-Stealer

Even three decades later, fans still approach Rochon about her character’s unforgettable moment — particularly the infamous joke about her feet, which became one of Boomerang’s most quoted lines.

“At the premiere, people were on the ground laughing at that scene,” Rochon said. “For a hundred years, people have asked, ‘Can I see your feet? Can I see your toes?’”

Her honest comments underscore an important truth in Hollywood — that memorable performances don’t always come from leading roles. Through creative input, self-confidence, and a touch of humor, Rochon transformed what could have been a forgettable supporting part into a cultural moment that still resonates.
