Jemele Hill: Bold Sports Journalist, Cultural Commentator, and Unapologetic Voice on Race and Power

by Gee NY

Jemele Juanita Hill (born December 21, 1975) is an American sports journalist, television personality, author, and cultural commentator. Known for her sharp intellect, fearless opinions, and willingness to address the intersection of race, sports, and politics, Hill has become one of the most influential Black female voices in American media.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Hill began her career as a sports writer for newspapers such as the Raleigh News & Observer, Detroit Free Press, and Orlando Sentinel.

She joined ESPN in 2006 and rose to national prominence as co-host of His & Hers alongside Michael Smith. In 2017, the duo became co-anchors of ESPN’s 6 p.m. SportsCenter (SC6). Hill drew widespread attention — and controversy — that year for tweets criticizing President Donald Trump, including calling him a “white supremacist,” which led to a two-week suspension after a second social media incident.

After leaving SportsCenter, Hill joined The Undefeated and later became a staff writer for The Atlantic. She is the author of the bestselling memoir Uphill: A Memoir (2022) and hosts the popular podcast Jemele Hill is Unbothered. Her work consistently challenges mainstream narratives on race, gender, and power in sports and society.
