Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese is once again in the spotlight, this time for an incident during the team’s recent matchup against the New York Liberty.
Reese, who had previously been fined for missing a press interview, incurred two technical fouls and an ejection during the game on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.
The game ended with a defeat for the Chicago Sky, as they fell to the New York Liberty with a final score of 88-75. Reese’s frustrations boiled over during the match, resulting in her accumulation of five personal fouls.
Her fifth foul, late in the game, prompted Reese to confront official Charles Watson, leading to her first technical foul. As she departed the court, Reese waved dismissively at the official, earning her a second technical and an automatic ejection.
Maj Forsberg, the lead official for the game, clarified that both technical fouls were issued due to Reese’s behavior. The first was for disrespectful addressing of the official, while the second was for demonstrating dismissal.
Under WNBA rules, players face fines based on the number of technical fouls accrued in a season. With Reese now totaling four technical fouls this season, she is subject to a fine of $400 per foul.
However, Lonzo Ball of the Chicago Bulls has publicly offered to cover Reese’s fine on her behalf.
Reese’s on-court performance saw her achieve a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double despite shooting 3-of-12 from the floor before her early exit.
In a game marked by a total of 39 personal fouls between the Liberty and Sky, including additional technical fouls for Betnijah Laney-Hamilton and Marina Mabrey, the referees faced a challenging night overseeing the match.
Stay tuned for updates on Angel Reese’s future games and disciplinary actions as the season progresses.
