Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon delivered an emotional farewell address reflecting on her years in office, saying her mission in the legislature was to amplify the voices of people often ignored by those in power.
“I didn’t come here to make my colleagues feel good,” Nixon said in closing remarks shared on social media. “I came to be the voice of those who have been overlooked and underrepresented for far too long.”
The lawmaker recently marked the end of her tenure representing parts of Duval County in the Florida House of Representatives, where she served for six years.
In a post accompanying the video, Nixon said it had been “an honor and a pleasure serving the people of Florida” and signaled she intends to continue her work in Washington, D.C.

Advocating for Working Families
During her remarks, Nixon highlighted efforts her office undertook to support residents struggling with rising costs and housing challenges.
She said her team helped uncover instances in which major retailers were charging higher prices in lower-income neighborhoods.
“We were able to stop corporate price gouging after learning some big box stores were charging between three and five dollars more on products in low-income and working-class communities simply because they can,” Nixon said.
Nixon also pointed to housing assistance efforts, including helping residents facing eviction or unstable living conditions.
She described the case of a woman who had been forced to live in a motel because she could not afford the upfront costs required to rent an apartment.
“Even after doing everything right,” Nixon said, the woman faced eviction from unsafe housing conditions created by landlords unwilling to make repairs.
According to Nixon, her office helped connect that resident and hundreds of others to more stable housing options.
Government Accountability
The Jacksonville-area lawmaker also criticized state systems she said failed to serve residents during times of need, including the state’s unemployment benefits program.
“My office stepped in and worked with families when our government intentionally failed them with the faulty unemployment system designed not to help folks when they needed it most,” Nixon said.
She added that her office regularly fielded calls from residents outside her district who could not reach their own elected officials.
“We answered calls when constituents from other districts couldn’t get a hold of their own electeds,” she said.
Legislative Achievements
Nixon also highlighted legislative work aimed at expanding early childhood education.
She said she sponsored and pushed for measures that helped ensure early learning providers received fair compensation while expanding access to educational programs.
According to Nixon, leaders within early education organizations later thanked her for advocating for the legislation despite political opposition.
A Message to Colleagues and Supporters
In closing, Nixon urged fellow Democrats and supporters to remain active in the political process and continue advocating for stronger policies.
“The battle can’t be won unless we get in the fight,” she said. “We need to put people over profit, politics, and even people over party.”
She concluded by reminding Floridians that they deserve stronger representation and a more responsive government.
“Our policy should honor the fact that hardworking Floridians should be the ones to shape their economies, communities, and lives,” Nixon said.
