A lawsuit filed by Breonna Taylor’s mother claims that she was briefly alive for “five to six minutes” after being shot.
The revelation was made in a lawsuit filed against Louisville Metro Police Department officers Brett Hankison, Myles Cosgrove and Jonathan Mattingly — who were responsible for the killing of the unarmed Black woman.
“Breonna, who was unarmed in her hallway, was struck by several rounds of gunfire. She was not killed immediately. Rather, she lived for another five to six minutes before ultimately succumbing to her injuries on the floor of her home,” the lawsuit alleges.
The suit also claims that Breonna received no help for her injuries from law enforcement who were present. According to her boyfriend Kenneth Walker, she was coughing as she struggled to breathe.
His account opposes the findings of The Jefferson County, who told The Courier Journal that Taylor likely died within a minute of being shot and couldn’t have been saved.
Jefferson County Coroner Barbara Weakley-Jones said, “If she had even been outside of an emergency room department at a hospital, and she got shot and sustained the same injury, they would not have been able to save her… So there’s no way that even if they (police) ran to her and tried to give her aid, they can’t do anything because it’s all internal injuries that you can’t stop.”
Just last week, it was announced that Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer would be placed under investigation for the handling of the Breonna Taylor case, the death of David McAtee and the protestors who were recently arrested while protesting.
The Government Oversight and Audit Committee (GOA) of the Louisville Metro Council filed an order Monday to officially launch an investigation “into the action and inaction of the Fischer Administration,” according to a press release from the city.
