After a three-match losing streak, Coco Gauff is back in the win column—but not without a battle.
The World No. 3 fought past Moyuka Uchijima in a tense second-round match at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, ultimately prevailing 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4).
A Hard-Fought Victory
Despite entering the tournament determined to turn things around, Gauff struggled with consistency.
She racked up 21 double faults and over 70 unforced errors, making the match far tougher than expected. Yet, the 20-year-old U.S. Open champion remained focused.
“It wasn’t my best tennis at all today, but I’m just happy to get through,” Gauff admitted after the match. “It’s been a rough couple of weeks, and I’m just happy to get a win on the court. No one likes to lose, and I came in here with determination. It wasn’t my best tennis, but a win is a win.”
The match lasted over two hours and 34 minutes, as both players showed resilience in long, grueling rallies.
Uchijima, who had gained momentum with a strong performance against Emma Raducanu, pushed Gauff to the limit before falling short in the final-set tiebreak.
Quick Turnaround for Gauff
With her 10th singles win of the season, Gauff advances to the Round of 32, where she will face 29-seed Maria Sakkari in a highly anticipated matchup.
Gauff, who won the United Cup earlier this year, now holds a 10-3 singles record in 2024. While her performance today left room for improvement, her mental toughness remains a key factor in her championship aspirations.
