Dr. Bernice King, daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, recently paid tribute to the late former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Dec. 29 2024, at the age of 100.
In her heartfelt statement, Dr. King celebrated Carter’s unwavering commitment to peace, justice, and equality, recalling how he led with integrity and compassion during his presidency.
Carter’s legacy, she noted, was built on his refusal to resort to violence in resolving conflicts, famously stating that he never had to “launch a missile, fire a bullet, or drop a bomb on anybody.”
His work to advance racial equality was particularly significant, with his appointments of 37 African American judges and efforts to support Black businesses through federal contracts.
Dr. King also honored Carter’s personal relationship with her family, emphasizing his contributions to the civil rights movement, including awarding her father the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and establishing the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in 1980. His steadfast partnership with her mother, Coretta Scott King, was a key part of their shared fight for human rights.
“The world would be a different place if we had 10 more Jimmy Carters,” Dr. King said, reflecting on Carter’s commitment to justice and human dignity.
She concluded by extending condolences to the Carter family and reaffirmed that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
“On behalf of The King Center and the King family, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Carter family. May you find comfort in knowing that his life and legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” she added.
Dr. King’s tribute underscores the profound impact Carter had on both the political and social landscape.
