The family of an elderly woman who was killed in a hit-and-run is pleading with the suspect to turn themselves in.
Detectives say Barbara Logan, 88, was killed after a pickup truck ran through a red light and struck her on Monday. She was instantly killed. The fatal accident happened in the 3700 block of Liberty Heights Avenue around 5:20 p.m., according to a CBS News report.
Logan was just minutes away from her residence when the collision took place. She had lived in the area for nearly 30 years. After the suspect struck the victim, he fled the scene leaving her to die, authorities say.
Logan leaves behind her dog Jeter, who is now under the care of her brother.
While investigators are combing through evidence to find clues into who killed Logan, family members only have memories of their loved one whose life was taken away from them.
“She didn’t plan to be the center of attention, but most of the time she was,” Logan’s brother, George Joyce, told CBS News.
He added that his sister would have turned 89 in November.
“I think it’s a tragedy,” Joyce said. “I think it’s unfortunate. Unfortunately, it’s been happening a lot of people driving through. They don’t pay attention to the traffic lights.”
The Foundation for Traffic Safety found that “hit-and-run crashes and fatalities are increasing. There were an estimated 737,100 hit-and-run crashes in 2015. This translates to a hit-and-run crash happening somewhere in the U.S. every 43 seconds. The 2,049 fatalities that resulted from hit-and-run crashes in 2016 were the highest number ever recorded.”
Following the accident, Baltimore Police released pictures on Wednesday of the truck responsible for Logan’s death. Family members are now urging the person responsible to come forward.
“Whoever you are, male, female, old, young, please turn yourself in,” Joyce said. “You don’t know what you’ve done to the family that has been left behind to mourn.”
