Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis achieved a crucial victory on Wednesday when a motion to delay oral arguments in former President Donald Trump’s case was denied.
The ruling keeps the December schedule intact as Trump seeks to disqualify Willis from overseeing the case involving alleged attempts to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results.
Trump’s attorney, Steve Sadow, requested the postponement, citing a pre-paid international trip with his wife to celebrate his 70th birthday and their 45th wedding anniversary.
Despite these reasons, the court rejected the motion, ensuring that oral arguments will proceed as planned.
The push to remove Willis from the case revolves around her alleged relationship with then-special prosecutor Nation Wade, which Trump’s legal team argues constitutes a conflict of interest.
A lower court had previously ruled in favor of Willis, and the matter is now before a Georgia appeals court for review.
Trump faces multiple charges related to his alleged efforts to manipulate the 2020 election results in Georgia.
If successful, the attempt to disqualify Willis could have delayed legal proceedings until after the 2024 presidential election, where Trump is the leading Republican candidate.
This ruling marks a significant setback for Trump as his legal team faces mounting challenges across multiple jurisdictions in the lead-up to the election.
