Halle Berry’s ex-husband, David Justice, is back with a vengeance. Nearly three decades after their split, the former MLB star is opening up about why his marriage to the Oscar-winning actress fell apart, and his comments are raising eyebrows.
Justice, who was married to Berry from 1993 to 1997, recently sat down on the All the Smoke podcast to talk about their whirlwind romance. According to him, Berry popped the question just five months after they started dating. “She asked me to marry her,” Justice recalled. “I said okay… I didn’t want to make her feel bad. But I don’t know if my heart was really into it. I was just in the moment.”
Once the honeymoon stage faded, Justice said cracks began to show. Growing up in the Midwest, he pictured a “traditional” wife, someone who would cook, clean, and be a hands-on mother if they had kids. But he claimed Berry didn’t fit that image.
“So, I’m looking at my mom, and I’m a Midwest guy. So in my mind, I’m thinking, a wife at that time should cook, clean, you know, and then I’m thinking, okay, if we have kids, you know, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with? And at that time, as a young guy, she didn’t cook, didn’t clean, didn’t really seem like a mother, and then we started having issues,” David revealed.
There were also moments of cultural clash. Justice described an incident where Berry greeted another actor with a kiss on the lips in front of him. When he questioned it, Berry allegedly brushed it off as “a Los Angeles thing.”
The marriage ended in 1997, with Justice filing for divorce. But he says the public narrative turned him into the villain, fueled by what he calls “the machine” behind Berry. The most painful part for him? Berry once spoke publicly about experiencing domestic violence in a past relationship without naming the person. Justice insists it wasn’t him but says her silence allowed people to believe otherwise. “She let the world think it. She didn’t come out and say, ‘Nah, it wasn’t David,'” he added.
His words have already sparked a heated debate online, with many people divided on his comments.
