In a significant development in the 2024 U.S. presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris has extended her lead over former President Donald Trump, according to a recent poll.
Harris now holds a five-point advantage, securing 42% of the vote compared to Trump’s 37%. This marks an increase from a July 23 poll, where she led by just three points.
The latest poll, conducted by Ipsos, surveyed 2,045 U.S. adults and revealed a shift in voter support. Independent candidate Robert Kennedy Jr., who previously garnered 10% in July, saw his backing drop to 4% in the August survey.
As Harris continues to gain momentum, online betting odds have also swung in her favor, making her the frontrunner in the upcoming election.
Harris officially entered the race on July 21, following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal after a lackluster debate performance against Trump on June 27.
The Vice President’s rapid rise has energized the Democratic base, leading to a surge in campaign rallies across key battleground states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
In a recent news conference, Trump proposed additional debates on September 4 and September 25, which would air on Fox and NBC.
Harris, however, has committed to the scheduled September 10 debate on ABC, marking the first face-to-face encounter between the two rivals.
As Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, continue to rally support, the Democratic ticket has seen record attendance at events and significant financial contributions from donors.
Meanwhile, Trump’s team has been forced to recalibrate its strategy in response to Harris’s growing lead.
The poll numbers reflect a critical shift in the race, as Harris’s late entry has galvanized Democratic voters, reshaping the 2024 presidential contest.
With the election just months away, both candidates are intensifying their efforts to sway undecided voters and secure a path to victory in November.
