Former Vice President Kamala Harris has publicly denounced the Republican-led U.S. Senate for narrowly passing what President Donald Trump has dubbed his “big beautiful bill.”

The Democratic presidential candidate in the 2024 elections is warning that the legislation could lead to devastating consequences for millions of Americans.

In a strongly worded post shared to X (formerly Twitter), Harris listed a cascade of adverse outcomes she claims will follow the bill’s passage — including mass losses of health care coverage, food assistance cuts, and increased energy costs — all to bankroll what she says are tax cuts for billionaires.

“Thanks to Senate Republicans, 17 million people will lose their health care,” Harris wrote. “Rural hospitals will close. Three million Americans, including veterans and seniors, will lose food assistance. Families will see their energy bills go up by $400 a year.”

The legislation passed by a razor-thin margin in the Senate with a 51-50 vote, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. The measure, heavily championed by Trump and his GOP allies, now heads to the House for final approval.

Harris Rallies Public Opposition

Harris didn’t mince words about who she believes will be hurt the most: working-class families, seniors, veterans, and rural communities.

“Senate Republicans are doing all of this and more — hurting working people across our nation — in order to pay for $1 trillion in tax cuts for billionaires,” she added in her post.

She urged Americans to act now, posting the Capitol switchboard number (202-224-3121) and calling on the public to demand that their House representatives vote no on the legislation.

What’s in the Bill?

While full details of the bill remain under scrutiny, early reports confirm that the legislation includes:

  • Deep cuts to Medicaid and SNAP benefits
  • Rollbacks on energy subsidies for low- and moderate-income households
  • Funding reductions for rural health care providers
  • A $1 trillion tax cut package aimed at high-income earners and corporations

Supporters of the bill argue that it reduces the deficit and stimulates economic growth. Critics, however, say it prioritizes wealthy individuals and special interests at the expense of the country’s most vulnerable citizens.

What’s Next?

The bill now faces a contentious debate in the House of Representatives, where Democrats are expected to mount a fierce challenge.

With public outcry mounting and key moderate Republicans remaining undecided, the House vote is expected to be a pivotal moment in the 2025 legislative calendar.
