Nuru Mugambi, the former Communications Director of the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA), has passed away after a long battle with lupus.
Mugambi, who was a transformative figure in the Kenyan banking industry, played a pivotal role in shaping the future of banking in Kenya and globally.
In a statement, the KBA expressed its profound sorrow over her passing, extending condolences to her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside her.
“Her dedication and leadership will not be forgotten,” the statement read.
Mugambi’s leadership at KBA spanned ten years, during which she spearheaded several major initiatives, including the Banking Industry Sustainable Finance Initiative and the Persons with Disability Initiative.
These projects were instrumental in driving inclusivity and positive change within Kenya’s financial services sector.
Her career milestones included becoming the youngest woman to earn the title of Fellow of the Kenya Institute of Bankers, an honor reflecting her industry excellence and leadership.
In 2016, she was recognized as an emerging African leader by the Eisenhower Fellowship programs and former U.S. President Barack Obama.
Beyond her work at KBA, Mugambi also served as a part-time advisor to the Sustainable Banking and Finance Network and as a board member for the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA).
She had a diverse career, contributing to organizations like Barclays Bank, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, and Georgia Pacific Corporation, and supporting women entrepreneurs in venture capital and private equity through Astia’s women-owned portfolio.
Her legacy of leadership and dedication will continue to inspire those in the banking and financial sectors both in Kenya and internationally.
