Former Vice President Kamala Harris sharply criticized Donald Trump following his recent State of the Union address, arguing that the president’s portrayal of a thriving nation ignores the daily struggles facing many Americans.
In an interview, Harris rejected Trump’s assertion that “the state of our union is strong,” saying her recent travels across the country tell a very different story.
“There was entertainment value to what he did,” Harris said. “But in terms of any substantive value to the people of America, it was lacking in every way.”

Harris Cites Economic Hardship
Harris pointed to encounters with working families to illustrate her concerns about rising costs and economic insecurity. She described meeting a Mississippi mother of three who relies on a weekly grocery budget of just $150 to feed her family.
According to Harris, the woman told her she often eats only what her children leave behind and must buy bottled water because local tap water is unsafe.
“This is America,” Harris said, using the example to underscore what she called the disconnect between official economic messaging and lived realities.
Health Care and Immigration Fears
Harris also highlighted concerns about rising health care costs and immigration-related fears among families. She recounted speaking with a mother who said her monthly health insurance premiums nearly tripled and who feared seeking medical care due to immigration enforcement anxieties in her community.
“These are not abstract policy debates,” Harris said. “They’re everyday realities for families.”
Criticism of Policy Priorities
The former vice president also took aim at federal spending priorities, arguing that proposed cuts to social safety programs would disproportionately affect vulnerable Americans.
She cited potential reductions to Medicaid funding alongside tax relief aimed at high-income earners, questioning who truly benefits from current economic policies.
“When he says the economy is roaring,” Harris said, “the real question is: roaring for whom?”
A Continuing Political Divide
Harris’s remarks reflect broader political divisions following Trump’s address, with supporters praising his economic messaging while critics argue it overlooks persistent inequality and financial strain facing many households.
Her comments also signal her ongoing public engagement on domestic policy issues as national political debates intensify ahead of future election cycles.
