TV host Loni Love has candidly critiqued Tyler Perry’s latest project, “Divorce In The Black.”
Tyler Perry’s latest film, “Divorce In The Black,” might be taking its title too literally. The comedy, featuring Megan Good and Cory Hardrict, has received negative reviews and currently has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Now, comedian and TV personality Loni Love has shared her thoughts on why the film may have failed: a lack of Black writers.
Tyler Perry’s Divorce, which premiered on Prime Video on July 11, tells the story of a couple struggling with their marriage as they confront the possibility of divorce.
Ava (Meagan Good), a young banker, is devastated when her husband, Dallas (Cory Hardrict), leaves their marriage. Dallas’ evil plans are foiled, however, when Ava is given the opportunity to fall in love with her true soulmate.
While the score is likely to fluctuate as more reviews are received, Divorce in the Black currently has a Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer rating of 0%. All ten professional reviews sent in agree that Perry’s latest Prime film is a complete disaster. The audience score is far more favorable, at 53%, but it is still rated Rotten.
Love took to social media to share her thoughts, offering both praise and a direct suggestion to Perry.
The renowned TV host reshared a post that read: “Tyler Perry’s newest Prime Video drama, Divorce in the Black, nabs a shocking and exceedingly rare 0% score on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer.”
Loni Love captioned her post, ” I love that Tyler is paying Black actors now. I wish he would hire Black writers and directors with experience to help him with his movies. He could improve the movies and make them award-worthy if he stopped trying to save money by doing the writing and directing himself.”
Tyler Perry is known for being a prolific creator who frequently writes, directs, and stars in his films. While this approach has helped him build a loyal fan base and carve out a space for Black actors in Hollywood, it has also been criticized for a perceived lack of nuance and reliance on clichés.
It remains to be seen whether Tyler Perry will take Love’s advice seriously.
