Hip-hop icon MC Lyte is making waves with the release of her first album in nine years, “1 of 1,” inspired by the 50th anniversary of the genre that she helped pioneer.
The legendary emcee is bringing her signature style back to the forefront with collaborations featuring industry titans like Stevie Wonder, Queen Latifah, and Common.
Returning to the Mic After Nine Years
“The love surrounding hip-hop’s 50th year made it clear that the time was now,” Lyte told Newsweek.
Known for trailblazing hits like “Bad as I Wanna B,” she saw the resurgence of legendary emcees as a signal to step back into the spotlight.
“I think for the most part a lot of us felt that way, which is why there’s been an onslaught of legendary emcees coming back to rock the mic,” Lyte shared.
The album came together organically, with the music itself guiding her choice of collaborators. “The record told us who we needed to call,” Lyte said, highlighting the collaborative process that brought some of music’s biggest names onto the project.
A Commitment to Craft
Lyte’s dedication to her artistry shines in the studio.
“When my entire team knows I’m going to record, it’s stop, drop, roll,” she said. “My phone is off, and I’m committed to the process of making the music—that’s what I love.”
This passion extends beyond the beats and lyrics; Lyte wants listeners to take away a powerful message.
“I just wanted people to understand there are second chances,” she explained. “We’re all one of one. You don’t need to mimic anyone else because you’re never going to be great as a carbon copy.”
What’s Next for MC Lyte
While fans are just beginning to absorb 1 of 1, Lyte is already teasing a follow-up project. Songs recorded with Toni Braxton, Anthony Hamilton, and Slick Rick didn’t make the cut for this album but may feature on the next.
“We’ve got quite a few tracks that may make it to this second album,” Lyte revealed.

MC Lyte’s return with 1 of 1 is a testament to her enduring influence and the timeless power of hip-hop.
