Michaela Coel Developing New BBC Series Connected to ‘I May Destroy You’

Michaela Coel is a hot commodity.

Following the massive success of her HBO series “I May Destroy You,” she’s reportedly developing a new series for the BBC that could have links to the “I May Destroy You.”

“It’s truly in Michaela’s head and it’s not for me to second guess that too much at this point. It’s at relatively early stages, but I wanted to let the fans of I May Destroy You know that there is a new show coming along,” drama controller Piers Wenger told Deadline.

“What relationship that show will have with the original series, [is for Michaela to decide]. There’s a relationship between Chewing Gum and I May Destroy You. There’s a through line to her thinking. I suspect there may be elements [of I May Destroy You] but it’s really too early to say anything specific.”

In the series, Coel’s character Arabella experiences flashbacks from the night she was drugged and raped in a bathroom stall of a club. Arabella tries desperately to recollect the pieces from the night, leading to her track down and confront her rapist.

Viewers resonated with Arabella, and during her cover interview with Variety recently, Coel broke down why she thinks fans connected with the role.

“Even though it’s fictional, there’s something very transparent about the show,” Coel tells the magazine. “I know a lot of people will say, ‘You think you know me, but you have no idea.’ And I feel like, ‘No. You probably do have a pretty good idea.'”

She added, “I think that this is the tip of the iceberg in terms of using fiction to really bring audiences to quite personal, challenging and dark places and asking audiences to question the world around them. The way people received the show, as we would say in London, gave me vim.”
