Michelle Williams Opens Up About What It Was Really Like Being Managed by Mathew Knowles

One-third of the iconic girl group Destiny’s Child, Michelle Williams, is sharing details about the intense training she endured while working for Beyoncé’s father, Mathew Knowles.

“Can I ask you one thing that I’ve always wanted to know?” asked a co-host on The Kyle and Jackie O Show where Williams was making an appearance.

“Beyoncé – Did she practice in the early days singing whilst running on a treadmill so that she could dance and sing at the same time and her voice would not falter?”

Williams responded, “Yes. That was training for all the girls of Destiny’s Child so that you could sing live and have stamina and endurance.”

The other co-host added: “I believe Beyonce’s father was one level under Joe Jackson with the training, he was no muck around. He was pushing, pushing, pushing and look at the success!”

Williams replied: “He was a great coach. I would liken him to a coach who wants to make sure that team gets the championship.”

Williams has been vocal about Knowles’ management style in the past. During a press tour in Canada, the 43-year-old said when Destiny’s Child was at the height of their success, she mentioned to Knowles that she may have been suffering from depression.

“I remember in my early 20s when I was in Destiny’s Child, speaking to our manager Mathew Knowles at the time and I said, ‘I think I’m depressed.’ He said, ‘You guys just signed a multimillion-dollar deal, you guys have Barbie dolls, you guys are about to go on tour.’ I said, ‘You’re right, so maybe I’m just tired, maybe I’m homesick. I just want to go home and see my family.”

She added: “Success does not heal trauma. It don’t heal it. It maybe gives you resources to get therapy or to go to a facility to get the help that you need. That’s what success did for me and I’m grateful for it. But it didn’t heal it. It kind of triggered and rattled it a little bit.”
