A Michigan woman is now dead after her husband shot her multiple times because she wanted a divorce.

Alicia Danielle Lofton had just married Marcus Durayalle Lofton in February but decided she no longer wanted to be with him, so she served him with divorce papers.

But Marcus wasn’t happy with her decision so he decided to kill her. According to MLive, he admitted to police that he gunned down his wife shortly after she was murdered.

The suspect was arraigned Aug. 18 and is charged with open murder and felony firearm. He is behind bars without bond.

The day before the arraignment, police responded to a call near Adams Street SE and Union Avenue to inquire about possible shots fired. When they arrived at the scene, they found the victim lying on the ground next to a house in the 1400 block of Union Avenue SE.

Police say Alicia had several gunshot wounds to the head and body and Marcus was immediately identified as the suspect, who was seen walking in the 1200 block of North Avenue NE shortly after his wife’s death.

“Detectives then interviewed Marcus Lofton. He told them that his wife — they married in February — had served him divorce papers on Aug. 16 and she told him she was selling the house,” the report reads. “Because he had been arrested in May for alleged domestic violence against his wife, he wasn’t supposed to be in contact with her.”

However, at around 8 AM, he came in contact with his wife. In an affidavit, Marcus said he had gotten into an argument with Alicia. He then grabbed her Glock from a drawer and attempted to hit her with it.

He later said the gun triggered. His wife fled to the bedroom and locked the door. After he was able to unlock the door, he said he found her trying to climb out the window.

“Marcus stated he shot Alicia numerous times before he fled in his maroon SUV,” police wrote in the affidavit.

Lofton is expected to appear in court Sept. 5 for a preliminary exam.
