Outgoing U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield Warns Trump Against Abandoning Global Leadership

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the outgoing U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, is sounding the alarm on the dangers of America retreating from global leadership.

As she prepares to leave her post, she cautions that a second term for Donald Trump could see adversaries like China further exploiting a leadership vacuum, threatening U.S. influence worldwide.

A Return to Engagement Under Biden

In an interview with the Associated Press, Thomas-Greenfield highlighted how the Biden administration reengaged globally, rebuilt alliances, and reestablished U.S. leadership after Trump’s first term.

“That is the gift we hand over to the next administration,” she said, expressing hope that the momentum will continue.

She specifically warned Trump’s nominee for the role, Rep. Elise Stefanik, about the risks of ceding ground to adversaries at the U.N., noting that rivals like China and Russia could “change the rules of the road.”

Challenges Under Trump’s First Term

During Trump’s presidency, U.S. contributions to the U.N. were drastically reduced. He withdrew from UNESCO, suspended funding to health and family planning agencies, and dismissed the U.N. as “just a club for people to get together.” Stefanik has echoed similar sentiments, calling for a reassessment of U.N. funding and referring to it as a “den of antisemitism.”

Thomas-Greenfield defended the U.N., acknowledging its imperfections but stressing its vital role in addressing global challenges like war, humanitarian aid, and artificial intelligence.

“If it didn’t exist, we would invent it,” she said, quoting former U.S. Ambassador Madeleine Albright.

Diplomatic Legacy: ‘Gumbo Diplomacy’

Known for her unique “gumbo diplomacy,” Thomas-Greenfield used her Louisiana roots to foster connections among diplomats, often over shared meals. Her approach helped drive the adoption of over 200 U.N. resolutions during her tenure, including 77 led by the U.S.

Reflecting on her career, Thomas-Greenfield, a trailblazing Black woman in diplomacy, urged young Black Americans to “dream big” and remain resilient in the face of obstacles.

Looking Ahead

As she transitions into retirement, Thomas-Greenfield plans to spend more time with her family and mentor the next generation of global leaders.

“The United States must stay at the table,” she said, emphasizing the importance of sustained engagement in shaping the world’s future.
