For all the 80s babies out there, this one is for you. Nia Long and Larenz Tate are back at it again to reminisce on their 1997 classic, Love Jones.
The pair is scheduled to appear at the 4th annual CultureCon NYC 2022 presented by Creative Collective NYC, a community and agency dedicated to facilitate spaces for multicultural creatives. The co-stars’ appearance comes on the heels of the film’s 25th anniversary and will feature a discussion on the film’s impact on Black culture, Black film and Black love.
Love Jones director, Theodore Witcher, said the film’s success was “a little bit of a mystery. If you could totally quantify it, then you could repeat it ad infinitum. But you can’t. So there was something about the two of them: They both liked each other in real life, which helps,” he said in an interview earlier this year.
The film grossed $12.5 million at the box office and its soundtrack quickly became the soundtrack to people’s lives as well, with hits like Lauryn Hill’s “The Sweetest Thing,” Maxwell’s “Sumthin’ Sumthin” and Dionne Farris’ “Hopeless.”
CultureCon NYC 2022 will also include “exclusive screenings, networking events, and activations for creatives and young professionals of color, all leading up to the big conference day” and will be divided into two events: the “Culture” and the “Creator Workshop” stages. The “Culture” stage will feature “creative forces [that] will inspire the community,” while the “Creator Workshop” stage will exhibit “creatives [that] will be able to come and learn specific skills.”
CultureCon NYC 2022 is presented by HBO Max with partners including LinkedIn, Cash App, Square, Meta’s We The Culture, Nike Yardrunners, Netflix, Audible, Disney’s Onyx Collective, TikTok, Prime Video, Foot Locker, Condé Nast, Clinique, and more.
