Saweetie has always been celebrated for her stunning looks, self-assurance, and that cool icy-girl vibe. However, the rapper recently shared that the very aspect of her that garners admiration has also been a source of adversity.
In a heartfelt discussion with Nessa Diab on Hot 97’s Nessa On Air, Saweetie delved into what she refers to as “pretty punishment.” She pointed out that while many people discuss the perks of “pretty privilege,” they often overlook its darker side.
“There’s a lot of talk about ‘pretty privilege,’ but they don’t mention ‘pretty punishment,'” she explained. “There have been numerous occasions where I’ve felt dismissed, and I know that’s rooted in animosity. It’s often tied to a hidden agenda, but it drives me to work even harder.”
At 31, the “Best Friend” rapper didn’t shy away from expressing her thoughts. She confessed that her image often overshadows her talent, and some in the industry have tried to undermine her due to that perception. There are even those who claim that her attractiveness is the sole reason for her staying power, a narrative that Saweetie believes brings its own set of challenges.
That animosity became evident when her music sales didn’t reflect the buzz around her. After one album sold just 2,000 copies in its first week, critics were quick to dismiss her. Yet, she is determined not to let that define her.
“I know it’s animosity. I know it’s a hidden agenda. But it makes me work harder,” Saweetie reiterated during the interview.
Saweetie’s journey has been scrutinized ever since her breakout hit “Icy Grl” in 2017. From viral moments on TikTok to industry gossip, much of the dialogue surrounding her has been less about her music and more about whether she merits her success.
