Mary J Blige has confirmed that she plans to officially retire from music in the next few years. But first, she’s gearing up for her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
The Grammy-winning artiste may be stepping away from the spotlight in the next couple of years.
With timeless hits like “Family Drama,” “Just Fine,” and “Be Without You,” the 53-year-old, who has graced the music industry for over 35 years, has rightfully earned the title of the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.”
The nine-time Grammy-winning queen of hip-hop soul released her 14th album, Good Morning Gorgeous, in 2022 and recently co-starred in actor Chiwetel Ejiofor’s directorial debut, Rob Peace, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.
In a recent interview with Extra, the 53-year-old music legend disclosed that she is already considering her exit strategy. During the interview, Mary J Blige revealed that she plans to take a break within the next few years.
“Right now, I’m definitely gonna do some more acting, and I’m definitely gonna retire in, like, five or six years.
“Right now, I’m still doing what I’m doing but not as often as I was doing it because I don’t have to now,” the singer revealed.
Mary J. Blige’s previous movie roles include The Umbrella Academy and Scream: Resurrection. She has also had memorable roles in films such as Rock of Ages, Mudbound, and the 2021 Aretha Franklin biopic Respect as Dinah Washington.
When asked what she’s singing about these days, Blige said, “Mary is singing about life. Life… love… being stable and understanding, you can have things like love. You can have a good life.”
The singer may be nearing the end of her incredibly lucrative three-decade career in music. Still, her accomplishments have continued flowing, as evidenced by her induction into the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
On April 21, Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & the Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, and A Tribe Called Quest were revealed as the new inductees on American Idol.
Mary J Blige will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this autumn.
