MSNBC host Symone Sanders-Townsend has sharply criticized a recent event held at Mar-a-Lago, which featured a documentary highlighting John Eastman, a key figure in former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
The gathering, attended by Trump and international political figures, drew ire for what Sanders-Townsend called a disregard for democratic principles.
A “Disgrace to the Constitution”
On Sunday’s episode of The Weekend, Sanders-Townsend called the event “sickening” and a “disgrace to this country.”
Her remarks pointed out the controversial role Eastman played in Trump’s post-election legal maneuvers, including attempts to use alternate slates of electors and pressuring then-Vice President Mike Pence to replace certified electors with illegitimate ones.
“This is sickening. I am sick,” Sanders-Townsend declared. “What Donald Trump did last night is a disgrace to this country and a disgrace to the Constitution.”
High-Profile Attendees and Political Implications
The event, held on Saturday, included prominent figures such as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.), and former Trump administration official Scott Bessent. Trump praised Meloni, calling her “a fantastic woman” who has “taken Europe by storm.”
Sanders-Townsend argued that the gathering revealed the values and intentions of Trump’s allies.
“They’re letting you know where their values are, what they think, and frankly, that if the president-elect was not successful in this last election, that they would have done it again,” she said.
Eastman’s Role in Election Subversion
Eastman, a lawyer closely tied to Trump, was instrumental in crafting legal strategies aimed at overturning the 2020 election.
His plans, including the alternate elector scheme, were pivotal in the efforts to subvert the electoral process. Critics argue that hosting an event to showcase Eastman’s work signals continued alignment with these controversial tactics.
Broader Concerns
The Mar-a-Lago event underscores ongoing concerns about Trump’s political strategies and his influence on global allies like Meloni.
For Sanders-Townsend and others, the gathering raises red flags about the former president’s commitment to democratic norms.
