An Oklahoma City educator has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault and battery after a middle school student sustained a broken collarbone during what the teacher described as “horseplay” in class.
Kiera Smith, 41, a science and social studies teacher at John Marshall Enterprise Middle School, was taken into custody on Nov. 26 following an investigation by Oklahoma City Police.
The incident, which occurred during two separate class periods on November 21, involved students and Smith engaging in “play fighting,” according to police records.
Incident Details
The first altercation began during the 5th-hour science class, where Smith was seen on video “wrestling with students,” placing one in a hold, and ultimately body-slamming him to the ground.
Later, during a 7th-hour social studies class, another student approached Smith, resuming what was described as “play fighting.”
According to the police affidavit, Smith lifted the student and slammed him to the ground, causing the child to sustain a broken collarbone.
Video footage captured the victim writhing in pain on the floor as Smith reportedly stood over him and yelled, “Anything else?” before walking back to her desk.
The injured student remained on the ground for 15 minutes until his mother, who also works at the school, arrived to help him.
Smith has a history of legal issues tied to her behavior in school settings. In 2018, she was arrested and later pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault and battery against a fellow teacher at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School.
Response and Investigation
Police obtained multiple student-written statements and videos corroborating the events.
While Smith claimed the injured student initiated the interaction and downplayed the severity of the incident, investigators noted discrepancies between her account and the video evidence.
